Categories are tags that you can apply to obligations to assist with grouping, filtering, and reporting within Insight for Funds. Your admins and standard edit-level users can apply, remove, and edit these tags to provide an accurate, high-level representation of the content to which your obligations pertain. This article will provide you with instructions on how to use categories to better organize and manage obligations within Insight for Funds.
Categories in the obligations dashboard
Categories appear as one of the default columns in the Insight obligations dashboard, representing a relevant grouping for an obligation.
You can filter the obligations dashboard list by selecting categories from the “Category” filter option, which will return only obligations that have at least one of those categories applied.
|
Individual categories belong to groups.
From the obligations dashboard filter tab, category groupings are indicated by a bold text header and indents for the individual categories.
For example, on the left, “Economic Terms” represents the grouping for the individual categories of “Expenses,” “Fees,” and “Payments.”

You can bulk-select categories belonging to the same group by selecting the group header. |

Apply categories to obligations
You can view, add, or remove the categories associated with obligations via the Obligation Details page, which is accessed by clicking on the blue hyperlink for the obligation from the obligation dashboard.
Categories are listed under the Obligation Details section, and can be edited by clicking the Edit button in the top-right corner of the screen.
In the Obligation edit screen, you can modify categories via the dropdown Categories tab.
Note that the Tasks associated with an Obligation will automatically inherit the categories assigned to that Obligation and are available as filters in the Tasks dashboard via the More Filters option.
Bulk Update Categories
You can apply category updates in bulk, to multiple obligations at once, by selecting the obligation checkboxes from the Obligations Dashboard and then selecting the Bulk Actions dropdown to apply the Assign Categories or Remove Categories actions to all the selected obligations.
Manage categories
You can manage category options by selecting the Edit Categories link above the Category dropdown anywhere it is found; for example, in the Obligations Dashboard.
This takes you to the Manage Categories screen, where all available categories are visible. You can select the category groups on the left to navigate directly to a group list of categories, which are shown in the center of the screen.
Custom Categories
The Ontra platform comes equipped with numerous pre-built categories and groups such as Laws & Ethics Codes and Compliance, respectively. Categories that you (or other users) create on the platform are designated as Custom categories.
| User-created categories are denoted with a Custom tag next to the category or group name. |
You can filter your view of the Manage Categories page to just the custom categories and groups by selecting either the Custom tab at the top of the page or the Custom Categories tab in the left-side navigation pane.
Add Category
You can add new categories by selecting either the blue Add Category button in the top-right corner of the screen, or the Add Category button in the top-right of a specific group.
|
Select the blue Add Category button in the top-right of the Manage Categories screen to create a new category under any group (or no group) by specifying the group from the Group dropdown. |
|
|
Select the white-background Add Category button to create a new category associated with the group where the button is located. |

Categories that you add manually will appear with a Custom flag next to them and can be edited via the kebab menu to the right of the category. Pre-built categories cannot be edited. |
